big bang, the speed of light, space bends

big bang... im having trouble believing in this theory. so as my first thought is why are people so willing to take in this way of thinking? the beginning of our universe started with a bang? what was it before that? one big lump of mass? why would it explode? the core of this huge unimaginable mass imploded into tiny particles all around the universe sharing gravity heat(suns)rocks water running into each other and eventually making planets and galaxies? eventually comming back to start all over again? where is the end of space? much like the edges of the earth there isnt exactly an end like some may think. there must be an end? are we as a galaxy a speck of dust so to speak compared to the rest outside of our little existence?

how do we know how fast is the speed of light? if a star is brighter, bigger, smaller, farther away or even closer does that effect the speed of light? i would think so.
we assume the speed of light is one speed? as the light bends through certain places in space wouldnt that slow the speed of light down, or is it the same speed? since there is not much atmosphere in space (or none at all some seem to think)the light does not bend very much through them areas. like an atomic bomb going off in space wouldnt be visible for long. but the radiation would still be out there. a gun in space might go off but the bullet wouldnt be moving very fast. the longer the barrel its possible the faster the bullet would travel.

how do we know that there is space that bends?
atmosphere bends light similar to light traveling through water. depending on how dense the atmosphere is i would think would slow down the speed of light. so how can we really know how fast the speed of light is? I think it varies for many differnt reasons.
